Hefeweizen - Free State Brewing Co., Lawrence
This is the first Free State beer I've been able to give a real review. Until lately it's been difficult to get Free State anywhere other than at the brew pub in Lawrence. Earlier this year Free State started sending kegs into the Kansas City market and now they are finally starting to bottle. Ironically, this Free State found its way to me in a growler, something they've been doing for years. Nonetheless, I'm excited to give it real review and see how this Hefeweizen stacks up.
Free State Hefeweizen hit the taps at their Lawrence brewpub a couple of days ago and I happened to be there for dinner. I had a pint of the beer then with my crawfish gumbo and really enjoyed it. So much so that I brought 64 more ounces home with me. Hefeweizens are among my favor beers. I enjoy the light and sour citrus as well as the wheaty base. Free State's Hefeweizen has all of the characteristics of a genuine old world Hefeweizen.
The aroma of this beer is yeasty, in a good way. It has that lemon and banana sweet and sour combination that I realy enjoy. The flavor follows the nose quite closely. My main complaint with this beer is that it is a little too lemony at times. That's mellowed out by the clove and spice which is nicely balanced and most noticeable in the finish. That finish is quite smooth and really enjoyable, if a little thin.
Hefeweizens are summer beers and while it is a little light and lemony, Free State's take on the style is a great choice for summer drinking. It's worth noting that my review glass of this beer was poured from a growler and may have been a little different in texture and carbonation than what you'll get at the brewpub.
