Mythos Hellenic Lager - Mythos Brewery, Thessaloniki
Mythos, the Corona of Greece. This beer is one I never really sought out... National macro lagers are generally not the best way to experience a country's brewing culture, and since we're talking about Greece here, I figured it had little chance of being any good. When I stopped by the fridge today to look for a beer I remembered we had some left over Mythos bottles from a friend's visit a couple weeks back. I'd had a bottle that night on the deck and remember being surprised by how not-horrible it was. This was in between a couple 750s of 10+% beers though, so I figured I'd give the Mythos a proper review.
The first thing you'll notice about the Mythos is that it comes in a nearly clear green bottle. Light bottles are never a mark of quality because they expose the beer inside to more sunlight... it doesn't help either that the six packs don't cover much of the bottles. It's a miracle if you manage to get one of these beers and it isn't spoiled. Luckily, this bottles seems to have survived. Opening the bottle and pouring it in to my glass was pretty uneventful. The aroma of this beer isn't bad, it smells like a Helles style beer should. You'll notice the pale malt and some grain. It smells like a stronger version of most macro adjunct lagers you may have had before. That isn't necessarily bad, it's just the style.
The flavor of this beer is about like I remember from that first bottle I had on the deck a few weeks back. It's light, tastes like a non-threatening sumer lager. The flavor isn't bad, it just isn't anything special. The texture is quite thin and borderline watery. It isn't a constant complaint so I wouldn't completely write it off as being too watery. The finish is light and a little crisp. There are no big malt flavor or really any hops at all so this beer is a bit boring.
The first time I had this beer, on the deck with friends, I enjoyed it. It was an easy drinking lager that was perfect for summer evenings. Under the microscope it's a bit different and the Mythos' shortcoming are more pronounced. Still, this beer isn't bad, it just isn't exciting....
