Michigan Brewing Company's High Seas India Pale Ale really wowed me. I can't say I'm in love with this beer, but it was definitely a surprise. This beer is every bit an IPA, it's beer and hoppy. It smells like citrus scented hops and light grains, just like you'd expect. Where this beer differentiates itself from other IPAs is the flavor. Sure, you can taste hops, hops and more hops... that's just part of being an India Pale Ale. What I wasn't expecting was the sweet malt flavor that greets you when you take your first sip.

Hop fans shouldn't be worried though, the dominant flavor in this beer is still bitter hops. Even though the High Seas India Pale Ale starts off sweet and malty, there is a crisp citrus hop bite that hits you mid-palate and leads to a bitter finish. The combination of flavors works really well. The addition of so much malt up front really changes your impression of this beer. If the malt was more subdued, this beer would taste like any other IPA.

If you're a fan of India Pale Ales you should give this beer a try. The malts may be more than you'd like in your usual IPA but I think they work really well here. Similarly, if you prefer maltier beers and are looking to get into IPAs, this beer is perfect for you.
