Curim Gold Celtic Wheat Beer - Carlow Brewing Company, Carlow
I've had this bottle of Curim Gold Celtic Wheat for about two months. It's a souvenir from a weekend trip across state lines. While we were out of town I stopped by a new beer store to see what exotic offerings they might have. The selection wasn't all that different to be honest, but I did find a few beers worth bringing home. This Celtic Wheat is something I hadn't seen in our local market so I thought I'd give it a try. At 4.3% ABV I didn't have high expectations of this Irish imported Wheat beer.
It's probably best I didn't expect a whole lot from this beer, because it ended up being a pretty mediocre Wheat. The common theme in this beer is "light" ...it's light in color, light in alcohol, light on the nose and perilously light on the taste buds. There isn't a whole lot of flavor in this beer. Being a filtered Wheat beer I knew this wasn't going to knock my socks off but I was holding out hope for some sort of surprise.... There wasn't one.
There are some sweet flavors in this beer that are quite pleasant. It's all a bit faint but it struck me as possibly Mandarin orange, but it's only a fleeting flavor you notice before the flavor washes off your palate and your left with a finish that tastes like an aluminum can.
If you're looking for a good Wheat beer, I wouldn't bother with the Curim Celtic Gold. If you could find it in sixers for cheaper than Blue Moon or Boulevard Wheat I'd say it'd be alright as a session beer if you're sharing with people you aren't terribly fond of...
