Two Jokers Double-Wit - Boulevard Brewing, Kansas City

Boulevard Brewing Company's Two Jokers Double Wit Summer Smokestack Release
Rating:
92
Style:
Belgian Double Wit
Serving Type:
Bottle
Alcohol by Volume:
8.0%
Aroma:
Smells like ripe oranges, light spices. Vague hits of other fruits but I'm unable to pinpoint which...
Appearance:
Pours light yellow into the glass and becomes cloudy, then opaque. Has a nice rich autumn orange color. Very minimal lacing.
Flavor:
Strongest flavor is citrus. A little orange and banana sweetness but spiced so that it isn't tangy, but rather a bit tart. Very little hop flavor.
Mouthfeel:
smooth, mild carbonation, medium bodied
Overall Impression:
Two Jokers is a stronger, more tart and more flavorful take on the classic Witbier style. The citrus and spice blend well and this beer has a rich and complex flavor profile. I'd suggest this to anyone looking for a more robust summer beer.

The latest beer in Boulevard's Smokestack series is called Two Jokers. It's a Double Wit beer which was something that intrigued me when I first heard of this release. As someone who loves wit beers (the wit/weiss style may be my absolute favorite style) I was initially very excited to try the Two Jokers... but then I got to thinking... "I really like wits, do I really need twice that much sour banana in my beer?" We all know there can be too much of a good thing, but does the same law really apply to beer? I'd say yes it does. Take hops for example. Personally, I can appreciate some fairly hoppy beers but when we get into IPA and APA territory my palate shuts down. I can't handle the hop overload... It's literally too much of a good thing, for me at least. So, did Boulevard create a sour overload with the Two Jokers, or were they able to find a good balance?

Well, I think they did find a near perfect balance, only barely bordering on "too much of a good thing" territory... Having drank three quarters of the bottle I can appreciate how fine of a line they've walked. The wits that I'm fond of have a light body and nice tart, sour finish. This bottle of Two Jokers has ample amounts of tart up front but doesn't have the sour after taste of a (single?) wit. Perhaps this is a trade off of loading up on spices and fermentables? I'm no brewer so that's the conclusion I'll have to go with for now...

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Two Jokers. The flavors are fantastic, and there is a great finish. It's a sweet beer with plenty of citrus flavor and low hop content. This is a perfect summer beer for a picnic or dinner. It'd go perfect with a grilled burger and a bag of chips in the park or on the patio.

One caveat here: the alcohol content of the Two Jokers is almost twice that of a standard wit, so don't plan on putting more than one of these down in a single sitting if you have any important errands to run. But hey, it's summer time, so if you're just headed to the pool or spending the evening on the porch then the Two Jokers will be the perfect beer to enjoy the warm weather.
